What is Informed Delivery by USPS?
Informed Delivery is an online notification system that allows you to preview incoming mail, track packages, set delivery instructions, or schedule re-deliveries. It is offered only to residential addresses and personal PO Box addresses in eligible zip code locations and isn’t for businesses.
You can check the availability of your zip code on the United State Postal Service website. The service is free; however, you must submit ID verification, proof of address, and have a USPS account to activate it.
The main goal of this service is to give you a remote preview of your mail from your computer or your smartphone before it arrives in your mailbox. And so, you can easily keep track of your mail or send out delivery instructions if needed.
How does it work?
When your mail arrives at the USPS Mail and Distribution centers, you receive an email notification with a greyscale image of the exterior of the letter-sized envelope.
This service is not available for packages or catalogs and magazines in most cases; you will only receive images of letter-sized mail processed through the USPS automated equipment.
However, you will receive package statuses with info like the tracking number (if available), estimated delivery date, and sender but no image.
You’ll receive email notifications for the first ten images only. The rest will automatically appear in the Informed Delivery dashboard which you can access through the website or the USPS app.
The mail images will be displayed for seven days as for package statuses; they’ll be displayed for 15 days of delivery before being removed.
You only have access to the exterior of the mail piece, not the inside content, simply to stay up-to-date with what mail you receive when you’re traveling or not home.
