To send holiday gifts from a virtual mailbox, plan for two deadlines. First, your mailbox location needs time to prepare the shipment. Then the carrier must receive it before the applicable ship-by date and local cutoff time.

For 2026, USPS recommends sending Ground Advantage packages within the lower 48 states by December 17 for expected delivery before Christmas. UPS and FedEx list December 23 for selected next-day services targeting December 24 delivery. Those dates do not tell you when to submit a forwarding request.

Use the carrier dates below, confirm your location’s handling schedule, and work backward. Information checked October 22, 2026. Recheck the service and route before shipping because schedules and availability can change.

What are the 2026 holiday shipping deadlines?

The table covers selected U.S. domestic services. USPS dates target expected delivery before December 25. UPS and FedEx dates target delivery by December 24 under their published schedules and conditions.

Check the USPS holiday shipping dates, FedEx 2026 shipping deadline chart, and UPS holiday schedule for source updates and exceptions.

Carrier and service 2026 ship by Scope and conditions
USPS Ground Advantage December 17 Contiguous U.S.
USPS First-Class Mail December 17 Contiguous U.S.; cards and letters
USPS Priority Mail December 18 Contiguous U.S.
USPS Priority Mail Express December 19 Contiguous U.S.; confirm local acceptance time
FedEx Ground Economy December 15 Check route and service eligibility
FedEx Ground and Home Delivery with five-day transit December 17 Applies to routes with that transit time
FedEx Express Saver December 21 Confirm service availability
FedEx 2Day and 2Day AM December 22 Confirm service availability
FedEx First Overnight, Priority Overnight, and Standard Overnight December 23 Confirm service availability
UPS Ground Check the route Use origin and destination ZIP codes
UPS 3 Day Select December 21 Some destinations require earlier shipment
UPS 2nd Day Air December 22 Some destinations require earlier shipment
UPS Next Day Air December 23 Meet the applicable pickup or drop-off cutoff

A Ground shipment has no nationwide deadline. For example, FedEx’s chart lists December 17 for five-day Ground transit and December 23 for one-day transit. Use the transit time for your actual route.

For Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and U.S. territories, check the applicable service separately. USPS says Ground Advantage shipments between the contiguous U.S. and listed offshore destinations can take 10 days or more. Do not apply the lower-48 Ground date to those routes.

The table also does not establish a universal delivery guarantee. Check the shipment’s quoted delivery date, eligibility, and current guarantee terms before paying.

When should you request forwarding from your virtual mailbox

Submit a complete forwarding request early enough for your location to finish processing and hand the package to the carrier before the chosen cutoff. Confirm the handling time with that location; don’t assume a 24-hour buffer will cover every shipment.

PostScan Mail’s package forwarding service lets you manage received packages online and request shipment. Receiving a package, preparing it, and handing it to the next carrier are separate stages.

Before choosing your request date, ask the location about:

  1. Holiday opening hours and the days it prepares outgoing packages.
  2. Processing time for your shipment and any packaging or consolidation request.
  3. The carrier pickup schedule and local cutoff time.
  4. Any missing payment, recipient, or customs information.
  5. Available services for the contents and destination.

Customer support hours don’t set a facility’s packing or pickup schedule. Confirm both when timing matters.

Work backward from carrier handoff

Choose a carrier handoff target that meets your delivery needs. Then count backward using the location’s confirmed processing days, cutoff time, and closures. Allow additional time if the shipment still needs inspection, documentation, or repacking.

For example, suppose your carrier handoff target is Thursday, December 17. If a facility confirms that it needs two full processing business days before that handoff, Tuesday and Wednesday must remain available for that work. In this example, you would complete the request by Monday, December 14, before the facility’s cutoff.

Those processing days are hypothetical. They illustrate the calculation and do not state a PostScan Mail turnaround commitment. Ask the location to confirm the request date for your shipment, then allow additional time as your schedule permits.

Allow for the retailer to mailbox delivery

If you are buying gifts online, include the first delivery in your plan. A retailer’s arrival estimate at your mailbox address does not include the later forwarding trip to the recipient.

Use the mailbox number and address format assigned to your account. Once the package arrives in your mailbox, check it and submit the required handling instructions. PostScan Mail’s mail handling process explains how incoming label images and requested actions work.

If an essential gift hasn’t arrived at the facility, ask the retailer about alternatives before relying on a forwarding deadline you may not be able to meet.

International holiday shipping needs a route check

No single international cutoff applies to every carrier, country, and service. Check destination availability, contents restrictions, customs requirements, and the delivery estimate for the actual shipment.

For the regions listed in USPS’s 2026 holiday table, the recommended dates are December 9 for First-Class Package International Service and Priority Mail International, and December 16 for Priority Mail Express International. Check the destination’s service availability before using those dates.

Other carriers publish service-specific schedules. FedEx also states that its listed international dates do not include time for customs clearance. Faster transportation services cannot remove customs requirements.

Prepare item descriptions, quantities, values, and other required shipment details before processing begins. Identify who will pay any applicable duties, taxes, and fees. PostScan Mail’s international shipping guide provides an overview of forwarding considerations; the destination’s current requirements control what you can send.

If you will receive the package at a hotel or temporary address, confirm that the property accepts deliveries and that your stay allows enough time for possible delays.

Military mail has earlier deadlines and address rules

APO, FPO, and DPO shipments need their own check. USPS’s 2026 table recommends November 4 for Ground Advantage, December 9 for First-Class Mail and Priority Mail, and December 16 for Priority Mail Express Military Service where available.

PMEMS is unavailable for the listed AE 093 ZIP codes and operates only at selected military and diplomatic Post Offices. Confirm the full destination ZIP code and restrictions before choosing the service.

Use the recipient’s military address as supplied. Do not substitute an ordinary international address or assume that a standard overnight courier service will deliver to an APO, FPO, or DPO address.

Compare consolidation costs against the time remaining

Consolidation can reduce the number of packages you send, but compare the final quote before choosing it. A combined package’s size, weight, handling requirements, and contents can change the available services and charges.

Ask the facility to compare separate shipment and consolidation, including packing, forwarding, storage, and carrier charges. Waiting for one more purchase may cost more in expedited shipping than consolidation saves.

Use PostScan Mail’s shipping calculator to explore estimates from the sending location. Confirm the final package details and available service before treating an estimate as your shipment price.

If you consolidate, set a date to stop waiting for additional items. Ship the packages already available when a missing purchase would put the rest of the delivery plan at risk.

Check the recipient before you approve shipment

Confirm the recipient’s name, address, postal code, unit number, and delivery instructions. If a signature option is available, check that someone can receive the package during the expected delivery period.

Check the carrier and mailbox location’s holiday schedules separately. For example, UPS’s 2026 schedule lists Christmas Eve delivery, but no Ground pickup that day. Air and international Air pickups require advance arrangements. Delivery availability therefore does not mean your facility can hand over a new shipment that day.

Keep the forwarding request confirmation, shipment details, and tracking number together. Monitor progress and contact the location if the handoff status remains unclear.

Prepare your holiday forwarding request now

Start with the date your recipient needs the package. Check the carrier route, confirm the mailbox location’s processing schedule, and submit the request with the information it needs to proceed.

Review your available packages and compare PostScan Mail forwarding options. Confirm your handling plan before the carrier deadline, especially if you need consolidation or international shipping.
